Leon Chris Ramundt, 81, of Eldora, passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora with the Rev. Corey Larson officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memory Gardens in Eldora. Visitation will be held on Friday evening from 5-8 P.M. at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora, with a Masonic service to take place at 5:00 P.M.
Leon was born on July 24, 1931 on his parents' farm in Reinbeck, the son of Henry and LaVera (Boege) Ramundt. He attended school in Reinbeck, graduating with the class of 1949. Leon was united in marriage to Frances Holthuis in 1951. To this marriage was born a son, Dana. They later divorced. Leon married Arlene Owens, the love of his life, on August 12, 1989.
Leon farmed his entire life and sold real estate for Leonard Realty for over 40 years, retiring in August of 2012. Leon took great satisfaction in helping countless families find just the right home. Leon was very involved in the poultry business, both raising turkeys and promoting the industry. Leon loved the Iowa Hawkeyes and was a football season ticket holder for over 50 years. One of Leon's greatest joys in life was time spent visiting with family and friends and he had a way of making everyone around him feel loved and special. He particularly enjoyed reunions and outings with the Reinbeck Class of '49.
Leon was a faithful member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora where he held many offices and leadership positions over the years; the Eldora Lions Club; Past Master of the Montague Lodge #117; Past Patron of the Ascension Chapter #158; Royal Order of Jesters; El Kahir Shrine; was a 32° Scottish Rite Mason; Past President of El Kahir-El Mecca Club; the Oriental Band; York Right Masonic Lodges; Past President of the Iowa Turkey Federation and the Midwest Poultry Federation; Leon was inducted into the Turkey Growers Hall of Fame in 2005.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Arlene; son, Dana (Pam) of Clive; step-daughters RoxAnne (Tom) Bartholomew of Evansdale and Gina (Jim) Owens of Taos, NM; grandchildren Ben (Holly) Ramundt of Dallas, TX, Kate (Brandon) Johnson of Des Moines, and Betsy (Sam) Christianson of West Fargo, ND; step-grandchildren Danny Bartholomew of Evansdale, and Cody and Travis Barnhill of Dallas, TX; three great-grandchildren; brothers Harlyn (Lu) of Cornwall, AZ and Virtus (Shirley) of Reinbeck; and was a special "grandpa" to Caitlyn, Jake, and Ryan Shadle of Boone.
