Leola Marie Schmidt, 93, of Grundy Center, passed away on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at the Cedar Falls Health Care Center in Cedar Falls, IA. A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 21st at 10:30 AM at the American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center, preceded by an hour of visitation. A private burial will take place at the Rosehill Cemetery in Grundy Center, following the luncheon at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Leola was born on September 18, 1922 in rural Lincoln Township, Iowa, the daughter of August & Tillie (Rewerts) Flater. She attended county school through the 8th grade. She worked at Manly Drug and Tic-Toc grocery in Grundy Center before meeting her husband Carl Schmidt. The two were united in marriage on September 18, 1947 at the Lutheran Church in Independence, Iowa. Leola and Carl were blessed with two daughters, Carolyn and Rebecca. After living several years on Carl's family farm in Colfax Township, their family moved to Grundy Center in the late 1950's, where they have lived for almost 60 years. Leola also worked for many years at Grundy Foods, in addition to staying home and caring for her two daughters.
She was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center, where she was active in many church circles and activities. Leola also was very active in the local Meals on Wheels program. Leola enjoyed reading, cross word puzzles, vegetable gardening, hand-held Solitaire, keeping up with the news and current events and having a vested interest in family members and their families. Kindness and caring are what describes Leola the most. She was a wonderful, selfless woman who will be dearly missed by her family and friends, and especially her daughters.
Leola is survived by her husband Carl of Grundy Center; daughters Carolyn Schmidt of Waterloo, IA and Becky Schmidt of Norwalk, IA; 2 sisters-in-law and 1 brother-in-law; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings Minnie (John) Arends, Louisa (Vernon) Reinicke, Alvin (Grace) Flater, Art (Lil) Flater and Alice Flater.
