Laurayne L. Meyer, 79, of Grundy Center, died from natural causes on Friday, February 4, at the Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am, Tuesday, February 8 at Colfax Center Presbyterian Church, rural Holland. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Monday at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Memorials may be directed to Colfax Center Presbyterian Church or the Grundy Care Center.
Laurayne was born May 16, 1925 near Dike, Iowa, daughter of Dick and Fannie (Andreesen) Claassen. She was raised on a farm near Holland and attended country school at Colfax #5. She was employed by Rath Packing and the Grundy Dry Cleaners before moving to Waterloo in 1959. On September 5, 1959 Laurayne was united in marriage to Eldon Meyer. While in Waterloo she worked as a pediatric nurses aid and housekeeper for Schoitz Memorial Hospital, and kept books for her husband's repair shop. In 1978 she returned to the Grundy Center and Holland area where she sorted corn for Payco and also walked beans for area farmers. In 1979 Laurayne and Eldon moved to Pahrump, Nevada returning to Holland during the summer months. Laurayne enjoyed traveling and collecting recipes.
Surviving are her step-sons, Gary (Linda) Meyer of Waterloo and Dean (Paulette) Meyer of Grundy Center; sisters, Darlyne Larson of Cedar Falls and Deloris Eilers of Holland; brother, Clarence (Ruth) Claassen of Grundy Center; sister-in-law, Effie Hook of Grundy Center; by six step-grandchildren and 7 great step-grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death was her husband, Eldon on February 22, 2001; her parents; and a nephew.
