Larry T. Havens, 72, of Steamboat Rock, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, August 12, 2013 at his home in Steamboat Rock while under the care of Iowa Hospice. A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 16th at 1:30 P.M. at the Steamboat Rock Baptist Church with Pastor Bruce Baillie officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 15th from 5 to 7 P.M. at the Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. Burial will follow the funeral service at the Steamboat Rock Cemetery and military honors will be performed by the Steamboat Rock American Legion.
Larry was born on April 21, 1941 in Eldora, Iowa, the son of Hollis & Meta Mae (Gelhorn) Havens. Larry and his three siblings grew up in Steamboat Rock and also spent some time at the Great Lakes Naval Base where his father was stationed. Larry graduated from the Steamboat Rock High School with the class of 1959. He later moved to Florida and worked as a security guard for Tupperware. In 1963, Larry enlisted with the United States Navy and honorably served his country until his discharge in 1967. He then enrolled at the Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls and studied to be an electronic technician. After college, he moved to Mount Vernon, Iowa in T.V. and radio repair. On November 25, 1970, Larry was united in marriage to Barbara Borschel. The couple later relocated to Lisbon and then made their home back in Steamboat Rock. The couple welcomed 6 children into their family. Larry owned and operated Larry's TV and Sound Service for many years and when his father retired from his electrical business, Larry took over Havens Electric.
He was a member of the Smokey Ridge Muzzle Loaders, was past Fire Chief of Steamboat Rock, member of the Steamboat Rock American Legion, former school board member and city council member, was part of the Tin Can Sailors and was a member of the Steamboat Rock Historical Society. Larry enjoyed gunsmithing and traveling with his wife. He also had a love for animals including his dog Fang and pet crow. Larry will be deeply missed by his family and all that knew and loved him.
Larry is survived by his wife Barbara of Steamboat Rock; children Roger (Janine) Havens of Iowa Falls, IA Priscilla Havens of Minneapolis, MN and Marc Havens of Steamboat Rock, IA; 5 grandchildren Kassidi & Morgan Havens, Erica & Sytire Williams and Yuki Rogers; sisters Charlotte (Les) Farago of Afton, MN, Janet (Terry) Folkerts of Klemme, IA and brother Robert (Barbara) Havens of Eldora; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; children Shane Michael, Adam John & Jory Ann Havens.
