Kenneth L. Coffman, 77 of Eldora, died on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at the Eldora United Methodist Church with Pastor Vicki Reece officiating. Burial will follow at East Lawn Memory Gardens in Eldora. Visitation will be at the church on Wednesday from 1:00 pm until service time at 2:00 pm. Memorials may be directed to the Eldora United Methodist Church. Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora is in charge of the arrangements.
Kenneth was born August 1, 1934, in Clarke County, Iowa, son of Arthur Wright and Alma Ann (Ruble) Coffman. He attended country school and graduated from Osceola High School in 1953. He was united in marriage to Betty Jean Kimes on Valentines Day in 1954 and to this union were born, Vicky Lynn, Douglas Lavern and Sandra Jean. Ken and Betty made their home in the Clarke County area working in the family agricultural business. Ken worked as a herdsman at the Bull Testing Station at Iowa State University in Ames in 1961 and then moved his family to Eldora in 1962 where he worked for the Cecil and Ruby Rooks Angus Farm. He moved into town in 1970 and then worked for Trojan Seed Corn, Pfizer Genetics, Confinement Livestock Systems, International Boar Semen, and Quality Seeds. In 1994 Ken and Betty purchased and operated the Village Motel in Eldora then in 2003 Ken worked for the city of Eldora, plowing snow in the winter and mowing in the summer months. Ken retired in July 2011 due to his health.
Ken was a faithful member of the Eldora United Methodist Church where he served on the board of trustees and on various other committees, the Eldora Kiwanis Club for over 30 years, and the Hy-Vee Coffee Club.
Ken was a happy, upbeat guy and he could see the positive side of everything. He was a family person and people person, and loved spending time with his kids and grandkids. Ken enjoyed listening to country music; wearing his plaid western shirts; and attending livestock auctions, horse shows and rodeos. He also enjoyed mowing his lawn and was known for his chocolate-chip cookies.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty; son, Doug and his wife Anita of rural Iowa Falls; daughter, Sandra Proctor and her husband, Samuel of Fort Dodge; son-in-law, Bryan Rotgers of Eldora; granddaughters, Jamie Lynn Rotgers and Keith Izer of Eldora, Abby Lynn Freese and her friend Louis Swaka of Des Moines, and Kelly Jean and Andrew Ewoldt of Grundy Center; grandsons, Luke Bryan Rotgers of New Providence, Torrey Proctor of Spirit Lake and Jared Proctor of Iowa City; great-grandchildren, Victoria Lynn Edgerton and Bryce Arthur Izer of Eldora; brother, Larry (Linda) Coffman of Seaford, Delaware; brothers-in-law, Gary (Helen)Kimes of Osceola and Steve (Marlys) Kimes of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; and by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Vicky Rotgers; brother and sister-in-law, Orval and Wanda Coffman; mother and father-in-law, Glen and Thelma Kimes; and brother-in-law, Robert Kimes.
