Kenneth Bern, 60, of Waterloo, passed away on Sunday, December 16, 2012 at the Harmony House Health Care Center in Waterloo. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 27th at 10:30 A.M. at the Dike United Methodist Church in Dike with Pastor Dan Ridnouer officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 26th from 5 to 7 P.M. at the Engelkes-Abels Dike Chapel. Interment will be held at the Reinbeck Cemetery.
Ken was born on September 12, 1952 in Grundy Center, the son of Wilmer Roy & Ruth Ann (Weiss) Bern. He grew up in Dike where he attended school, graduating with the class of 1971. He then went on to Hawkeye Tech. where he furthered his education in auto mechanics. Ken worked as a mechanic for Stephen's Dodge from 1973 – 1976, Denning Chevrolet from 1976- 1979 & Karl's Chevrolet from 1979-1980. On September 22, 1979, Ken was united in marriage to Marcia Strohbehn in Dike. Together, the couple welcomed a son, Nicholas. The two later divorced.
Ken had a true love of cars. He enjoyed working on cars and enjoyed Classic cars. He also enjoyed motorcycles. Ken was extremely social and outgoing and lived life to its' fullest. He will be dearly missed by his family and all that knew and loved him.
He was a member of the the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Waterloo.
Ken is survived by his mother Ruth Ann Gooden of Cedar Falls; son Nicholas Bern of Ankeny; former wife Marcia McAdoo of Ankeny; brothers David (Kay) Bern of Dike, Mike Bern of Dike & Dan (Tammy) Bern of Cedar Falls & a sister Kathy Bern of Seattle, WA; many nieces and nephews. Ken was preceded in death by his father Wilmer; step-father Sam Gooden.
