Keith Perry Van Patter, 84, of Eldora, died at the Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, Iowa, on Sunday, January 20, 2008.
Keith was born October 9, 1923, in Eldora, Iowa, the son of Edgar A. and Mildred R. (Perry) Van Patter. He graduated from Eldora High School in 1941 and attended the National School of Aeronautics in Kansas City. Keith worked for Lockheed Corp. in California until enlisting in the United Sates Army in 1944. He served in France and Germany with Company M 345th Infantry Battalion, 87th Infantry Division. Company M helped liberate the German towns of Plauen and Coblentz.
Keith and Patricia Wolcott were united in marriage at the First Congregational Church in Eldora on July 26, 1945. He farmed until 1960, when he was elected Hardin County Recorder. He held that job for 34 years until his retirement in 1995. Keith and Pat lived on a farm northwest of Eldora that has been in the family for nearly 60 years. Keith was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, where he served as Financial Secretary for many years. He was a member of the Eldora Kiwanis Club and the American Legion and V.F.W. Posts in Eldora served as the Legion Adjutant for many years. He was also a longtime member of the Legion?s 40 & 8 Club.
Surviving are his wife Pat; daughter Linda and her husband Harley Thornton of Des Moines, Iowa; son Dennis Van Patter of Lakewood, Colorado; granddaughters Ann and her husband Dustin Mars and Kelli and her husband Jim Kirkman; great grandchildren Olivia, Braden, Addison, and Macy Mars, and Max and Claire Kirkman. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Doris Van Patter.
