Kay was born on April 19, 1954 in Grundy Center, Iowa, to her parents Howard and Gladys Bowers. She was raised in rural Dike, and graduated from Dike High School in the Class of 1972. Kay was united in marriage to her husband Glen Nielsen on December 26, 1970 at the Dike United Methodist Church; together they welcomed three daughters into their family.

Kay was a life-time member of the Dike United Methodist Church. Through the years she served the church on many committees, was a Sunday school teacher and most recently was the Children's Choir Director. Kay spent hours in her flower gardens, enjoyed walks around the lake and attending her grandchildren's activities. She will be remembered for her laughter, sense of humor and her gift of making each person feel special. Her true joy in life came from spending time with her family, especially caring for her 8 grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband Glen; daughters Angie (Tony) Norton, Sara (Rob) Heerkes, Maureen (Justin) Stockdale; grandchildren Katelyn, Jenna, Jacob, Madelyn, Izzy, Addy, Noah and Isaac; mother Gladys Bowers and brother Keith Alberts. In death Kay rejoins her father Howard and her brother Kent Alberts.
