Karen Jean Meyer, 79, of Wellsburg, died Sunday, May 19th, at 7:15pm, at Allen Hospital in Waterloo.
Karen was born on January 28th, 1940, in Cedar Falls, daughter of Ralph and Elner (Foote) Sassaman. She graduated from Cedar Falls high school in 1958; and was married to LuRay Meyer on October 7th, 1966. Some of her jobs were at Bordens and the UNI library, both in Cedar Falls. She retired from the library to start a family. After having children, she had an at home daycare for many years.
Karen loved her family and watching her grandkids grow up. She also greatly enjoyed playing the organ and piano anytime, anywhere, including numerous churches. She was even a pianist for “The Messengers” quartet for several years.
Karen is survived by her mother, Elner (Foote) Sassaman; her husband, LuRay Meyer; her son, Myles (Sheryl) Meyer, and her daughters, Melinda (Mark) Reding, and Michelle (Paul) Fink; eight grandchildren: Candice and Samuel Meyer, Bailey and Skylar Reding, Angelic, Madison, Noah and Samantha Fink; and two sisters, Helen (Herb) Bosley, and Elizabeth (Dan) Gardner. She was preceded in death by her father, Ralph Sassaman; her sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Richard Schirm, and her brother, James Sassaman.
Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 24th, at 1st Christian Reformed Church in Wellsburg. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, May 23rd, at Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg. A sign language interpreter will be provided for the funeral service. Burial will take place at the First Christian Reformed Church Cemetery.
Memorials: in lieu of flowers, direct memorials to the family.
