John E. Ruter, 95, of Wellsburg, Iowa, passed away Christmas morning December 25, 2007 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital of natural causes.
John was born December 23, 1912 on the family farm near Wellsburg, Iowa, the son of Eike and Trientje (Luppen) Ruter. He attended country school, Shiloh #6, near Wellsburg. On June 13, 1943 John was united in marriage to Hattie Naber in North Augusta, South Carolina. She preceded him in death on January 17, 2002.
Previous to serving his country during World War II from 1942 ? 1945, John worked for various area farmers and also for John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo, Iowa. From 1946 to 1976 John and Hattie lived on a farm southeast of Wellsburg; in 1976 they retired to their home in Wellsburg where he continued to live until three weeks prior to his death.
John enjoyed farming for over 60 years and also sports, especially golf. He always took pride and pleasure in attending his grandchildren?s activities, including their sporting events, especially basketball games, county and state fairs, and 4-H and FFA events. John was a lifelong member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church.
Survivors include: one daughter Nadene and her husband Ken Van Hauen of Grundy Center; two grandchildren Clint Van Hauen of Colo, Iowa, and his fiancAC.e: Sarah Sandblom of Des Moines, Iowa, and Krista Van Hauen of Peoria, Illinois; and two sisters Emma de Neui of Ackley and Alice Ruter of Wellsburg.
John was preceded in death by his parents: his wife; four brothers: Herman, Fred, Peter, and Eike Ruter; and seven sisters: Lena Heinrich, Gepka Ruter, Jessie Finke, Gertie Rieken, Grace Meyer, Edith Beck, and Hilda Lindaman.
