John A. Miller, 80 of Waterloo, passed away at his home on Monday, November 5, 2012 while under the care of Care Initiatives Hospice. A visitation will be held on Friday, November 9, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, Dike Chapel. Burial will follow the visitation at the Elmwood Cemetery in Dike with Military Honors conducted by the Dike American Legion Post #471. Memorials may be directed to the family.
John was born on July 22, 1932 in Reinbeck, Iowa the son of Hugh and Sarah Miller. John graduated from Dike High School with the Class of 1951. Upon his graduation he joined the US Army and served in Korea during the Korean War.
John worked as a crane operator for over 35 years in southern California. He helped construct the Crystal Cathedral in Irvine, CA. John also worked as the crane operator that was responsible for flying Sally Field in the television show "The Flying Nun" and Don Knotts in the film "The Reluctant Astronaut." John loved reading western novels and spending time with his family.
John is survived by his son Stephen H. Miller; grandson Damion J. Miller and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Lyman and Melvin Miller and sister Sibyl Black.
