Joan Balvanz

Joan J. Balvanz, 77, of Eldora, died on Thursday, August 30, 2012 at Valley View Nursing and Rehab Center in Eldora while under the care of Iowa Hospice. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, September 4 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora with Pastor David Splett officiating. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Memory Gardens in Eldora. Visitation is from 5 pm to 8 pm on Monday, September 3 at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. Online condolences may be made at www.abelsfuneralhomes.com

Joan was born October 16, 1934 in Gifford, Iowa, daughter of Russell and Verna (Zeltman) Balvanz. She lived her entire life in the Eldora area graduating from Eldora High School in 1953. On November 7, 1953, Joan was united in marriage to Marvin "Mick" Balvanz and they farmed near Eldora. To this union were born two children, Marjorie and Mark. Joan worked for the Hardin County Sheriff's office for many years.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where she had been involved with the Ladies Aid, Hannah's Helping Hands Circle, Tuesday Quilting, Choir and she was involved with compiling the confirmation picture display. She enjoyed cooking (cinnamon rolls), gardening and canning.

Surviving is her husband, Mick; daughter, Marjorie Smith of Ames and her companion Webster Wilke; son, Mark Balvanz of Eldora; brothers, Larry (June) Balvanz of New Providence, Loran (Sharon) Balvanz of Eldora and Lonnie (Rita) Balvanz of Eldora; grandchildren, Ketra Smith, Porshia (Paul) Perkins, Kelsey Balvanz and Shea Balvanz; and by great-grandchildren, Breshay Smith, Delaney Smith-White, Bela Perkins and Noam Perkins. She was preceded in death by her parents.
