Jeanne Elizabeth Bernard, 95, of Union, died at Eldora Nursing and Rehab Center in Eldora, Iowa on Sunday, January 18, 2015. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 23, 2015 at the Community Church in Union, Iowa. Burial will be at a later date at Hillside Cemetery in State Center, Iowa. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Memorial may be directed to the family.
Jeanne Elizabeth was born on August 18, 1919, in Melbourne, Iowa the daughter of William and Beatrice (Byerly) Gilgen. She attended country school near her home and later graduated from State Center High school in 1938. On June 30 1938 she was united in marriage to Everett Dale Bernard in Tama, Iowa and made their home in State Center, Iowa. In 1953 they moved to Colorado and moved back Iowa to Union, Iowa in 1955.
She was very active with the American Legion Auxiliary. She was recognized for her many hours of volunteer work. She was a member of Community Church in Union, Iowa where she belonged to many church groups.
Jeanne enjoyed playing cards, sewing, working on puzzles, embroidering and spending time with friends and family especially her grandchildren.
Jeanne is survived by her children; Becky Caster of Union, Nikki Bernard-Mattson of Eldora, Bernard (Jeanine) Bernard of Union; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; one brother William (Beth) Gilgen of Marshalltown.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Everett in May of 1995; daughter Anita Sue Westcott in July of 2009; sisters, Ruth Rector-Fettkether and Margerite Westphal.
