Jay Juchems, age 86, of Steamboat Rock, passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, in Mason City. He was born March 4, 1928, to Cornelius and Amka Juchems, in rural Hardin County.
Jay graduated from Eldora High School, but completed the majority of his education in the Steamboat Rock Schools. Upon graduation, he attended barber school, and returned to the area he grew up in to pursue a career as a barber. Jay also took over the family farm, and held several custodial jobs with various businesses in the area. He particularly enjoyed driving the school bus for the junior high athletic teams.
Jay married Frances Hulseman on February 26, 1970. They shared 44 years of marriage, and two children were born into the union. Jay enjoyed woodworking, and took great pride in making projects for his children. He also enjoyed being outdoors, and would find any reason he could to mow the lawn. In his youth, Jay was an avid bowler, and was recognized by the conservation commission as having one of the first terraced farms in the area. He enjoyed watching Lawrence Welk, Westerns, and was a regular at the Rock Stop and Ahoy Fountain, where he would spend hours visiting with patrons, and catching up on the news. One of his greatest joys was watching his daughter get married.
Jay is survived by his wife Frances; children, Pamela (Paul) Fangmann, and Brian Juchems(Jeremy Briggs); siblings, Ben Juchems, Florence Burns, and Jan Allen. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister-in-law Betty Juchems, and brothers-in-law Bill Burns and Herb Allen.
Services will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church, 401 Market St, Steamboat Rock. A visitation will take place Friday, May 16 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Creps-Abels Funeral Home, 905 Edgington, Eldora.
