Janet Margaret. Flater, 94 of Grundy Center, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, June 30, 2010 from natural causes at Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in Grundy Center, Iowa. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Saturday, July 3, 2010, at the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center with Pastor Tom Bower officiating. Burial to will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Visitation will be from 5 pm to 7 pm on Friday, July 2, 2010, at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. A memorial has been established.
Janet was born in Pleasant Valley Township in rural Grundy County on March 29, 1916, the daughter of Henry and Lena (Groen) Peters. She attended rural schools. Janet lived her whole life in Grundy County. Before her marriage, Janet worked as a hired girl and earned from one to four dollars a week.
On February 9, 1938, she was united in marriage with Ernest Flater. She and Ernest farmed in Lincoln and Colfax Township. Janet worked alongside her husband until their retirement in 1977. Janet was member of Bethany Presbyterian Church for 71 years
Janet loved gardening, playing cards, and visiting with friends, fishing and camping, but most of all she loved spending time with her family.
Janet is survived by her children, Darrel (Marsha) Flater of Cedar Falls, Mardean (Marvin) Van Deest of Holland and Delmar Flater and special friend Mary Hopp of Grundy Center; five grandchildren, Jeff Van Deest, Kristie Salo, Ryan Flater, Brad Flater and Kim Boren; and 11 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Lena Peters; husband, Ernest; one brother, and sister.
