Janet Ann Akkerman, 95, of Grundy Center, Iowa, passed away Monday, March 26, 2007 at Grundy County Memorial Hospital- Long Term Care in Grundy Center, Iowa. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M., Thursday, April 5, 2007, at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church, rural Holland, Iowa, with Pastor Larry Hoop officiating. Music will be provided by Dr, Gregg Akkerman. Burial will follow at the Colfax Center Cemetery, in Holland, Iowa. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 4, 2007, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center, where the family will be present to greet friends.
Janet Akkerman was born October 27, 1911 on a farm located near Buck Grove, Iowa owned by her parents Jacob and Jennie Rindels. She later married Herman Akkerman and they resided on a farm north of Grundy center for over 30 years. In 1972 they retired to their new home in Grundy Center. Janet and Herman lived together for almost 30 years and were never separated during that time.
Janet was an outstanding homemaker and lived the life of a farm wife for much of her life. She also was a very fine seamstress as well as a cake decorator. It was not unusual for her to bake and decorate wedding cakes as well as create the gowns for the young brides and her attendants. She also created and assembled well over 1,000 purses that were sold throughout the Midwest.
During her active years she was involved with the church, with her God and bible being an important aspect of her life. For over 28 years she and Herman traveled together to California to visit their son and family.
Janet was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and six siblings.
Janet is survived by her son Don and his wife Florence; 5 grandchildren: Doni L. (Marilyn); David M. (Tami); Gregg (Terese); and Jeff (Frieda); 12 great-grand children and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She will be missed by family and friends.
