James Carl Traeger, born on July 31st, 1952, to proud parents Carl Henry Traeger and Donna Mae (Kroeger) Traeger in Belmond, Iowa, left this world on Thursday, January 11, 2024.
Jim began his journey in Belmond, attending Belmond High School, where he would graduate with the class of 1971. Jim’s adventurous spirit led him to partake in the Iowa High School Rodeo as a fearless bull rider and a formidable High School Wrestler. Following graduation, he pursued Animal Science at Hawkeye Tech.
Jim married Elizabeth (Liz) Mooty on February 8, 1974 and they welcomed two sons, Daniel and Levi. Jim’s professional journey led him to Garst, where he worked as a ranch hand and then moved on to work for multiple local farmers in the Grundy Center area, and as a welder at Ritchie, before settling in at the Iowa State Training School for many years, earning the affectionate nicknames of “Thumper” and “Trigger” as a Youth Service Tech.
A man of many talents, Jim was not only dedicated to his professional endeavors but also engaged in various activities that shaped his character. He was an active participant in 4-H and FFA, and served as a 4-H club leader instilling a sense of responsibility and dedication in the youth of his community.
A true cowboy at heart, Jim harbored a profound love for horses and other livestock from a very young age. His eyes would light up with joy, as he watched his grandchildren participate in 4-H horse and sheep shows. He made a point to stop by the barn at his sons to check on the lambing season progress and really enjoyed the excitement of a new lamb being born. Jim also enjoyed riding and camping with his siblings and friends he met in Eminence, Missouri.
Beyond his accomplishments, Jim will be remembered for his quick wit, sense of humor and playful harassment. His laughter will echo in the hearts of those who had the privilege of sharing precious moments with him.
James Carl Traeger leaves behind his sons Dan (Andrea) Traeger, Levi Traeger, and three grandchildren Ryan Traeger, Madison Traeger, Lexi Traeger, Brothers Keith (Karen) Traeger, Larry Traeger (Deb), Craig (Dawn) Traeger, Kevin Traeger and two sisters Lorie Hill (Dewey), and Christa Traeger and many nieces and nephews.
Jim is preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth (Liz) Mooty, parents Carl & Donna Traeger, Sister Kathy Quam and sister in infancy Debbie
May we cherish the memories that will forever hold a special place in our hearts. May he find eternal peace in the vast pastures of heaven, riding alongside the horses he so dearly loved.
