James L. Riggins, 77, of Eldora, Iowa, died Thursday, October 18, 2007, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. Funeral services will be
10:00 A.M., Monday, October 22, 2007, at the Eldora United Methodist Church, with Pastor Richard Boatman officiating.
Graveside services will be 2:00 P.M., Monday afternoon, at the Immanuel Reformed Church Cemetery, rural Belmond, Iowa. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Immanuel Reformed Church in Belmond or to the Allen College of Nursing in Waterloo. Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora is serving the family of James L. Riggins.
James Leonard Riggins was born November 12, 1929, in Dougherty, Iowa, the son of Ross and Helen (Wilson) Riggins. The family moved to Alexander, Iowa, and he received his education there. On November 11, 1950, James was united in marriage to Marian A. Loats of Belmond, Iowa. In 1951, James served in the United States Army during the Korean War with the Seventh Infantry Division, until he was honorably discharged in 1952. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his service to his country. In 1952, James and Marian moved to Eldora to make their home. James owned and operated Jim Riggins painting for over fifty years. He also worked as a rural mail carrier for fifteen years. James was a member of the Eldora United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Walter-Sayer Post 182 of the American Legion and Roll-Harless Post 3974 of the VFW of Eldora; the Korean War Veteran?s Association; the Seventh Infantry Division Association; the D.A.V; and the Purple Heart Association. James was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He loved to golf and bowled in a league in Eldora for many years.
His wife Marian died on April 20, 2006, and James continued to make Eldora his home.
He is survived by one daughter-Catherine Roberts and her husband Jeffrey of Downers Grove, Illinois; two grandchildren, Laura and Brian; three sisters- Betty Raines of Victor, Montana; Dorothy Garcia and her husband Leo of Kailua Kona, Hawaii; and Marvyl Clemens and her husband Gordon of Union, Iowa;
and two brothers-in-law- Fred Loats of Belmond, Iowa and Kenneth Loats and his wife Marcy of Granville, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Marian; and four brothers-Russell, Robert, Donald, and David Riggins.
