James William Van Deest, 66, of Grundy Center, Iowa, died of natural causes, Friday, April 3, 2009, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center, Iowa.
Jim was born March 14, 1943, in Palermo Township in Grundy County, the son of William and Esther (Huisman) Van Deest. He attended country school and graduated from Wellsburg High School in 1961. He attended Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls for 1 year. On October 20, 1962 he was united in marriage to Shirley Kaye Krull at the Second Christian Reformed Church in Wellsburg, Iowa. The couple lived in Wellsburg until 1965 when they moved to Grundy Center. Jim worked as a self employed carpenter and also as a floor layer and salesman for Horbach Furniture for over 40 years. Jim was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church. Jim enjoyed his family. He especially enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren in sporting events and other activities.
He is survived by his wife: Shirley; a son: Lance and his wife Denise Van Deest of Bettendorf, Iowa; a daughter: Lorinda and her husband Bryon Hook of Holland, Iowa; 5 grandchildren: Brent and wife Megan Hook, Seth Van Deest, Trevor Hook, Jayme Van Deest, and Brady Hook; a great grandson: Aiden Hook; 5 brothers and their wives: Ben and Dee Van Deest of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Ted and Linda Van Deest of Wellsburg, Iowa, Larry and Faye Van Deest of Grundy Center, Iowa, Al and Michelle Van Deest of Wellsburg, Iowa, and Mel and Jani Van Deest of Clive, Iowa; 3 sisters and their husbands: Linda and Howard Peters of Maxwell, Iowa, Sue and Alan Lutterman of Wellsburg, Iowa, and Coleen and Tim Ralston of Grundy Center, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents William and Esther Van Deest.
