James Bernhardt

James Kallmer "Jim" Bernhardt, 90, of Dike, passed away on Thursday, July 30, 2015 at the Parkview Manor in Reinbeck. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 3rd at 10:30 AM at the St. Gabriel Catholic Church in rural Reinbeck with Father David Kucera officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 2nd from 4 to 7 PM at the Engelkes-Abels Dike Chapel with a 7 PM Scripture Service. Burial will follow Mass at the Elmwood Cemetery in Dike with military rites performed by the Dike American Legion Post #471. Memorials may be directed to the family. Jim was born September 7, 1924, on a farm near Odebolt, Iowa, son of Fred & Isabelle (Kallmer) Bernhardt. He married Ilene Halvorson on September 19, 1953.

Jim graduated from Schaller High School in 1941. He served in the United States Army during WWII in the European Theater. He later graduated from Iowa State University in Animal Husbandry. Jim worked in the farm-related industry his entire life.

He is survived by his wife Ilene of Dike; children Jan (Bill) Duffy of Cedar Rapids, Joyce (Larry) Willms of Dike, Steve (Rhonda) Bernhardt of Marion and Mary Bernhardt of Waterloo; three grandchildren Kevin (Laura) Willms, Jenny (Drew) Pederson and Brett Bernhardt and three great-grandchildren Matthew, Katherine and Caroline Willms; four brothers Bob of Clarion, Wes of Odebolt, Rich (Margie) of Lititz, PA and Don (Norma) of Florrissant, MO and sister Arlene Grundmeier of Storm Lake; sister-in-law Ila (Ken) Wangsness of Allison. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; two brother-in-laws and 2 sister-in-laws.
