Jake Edward Heeren 85, of Grundy Center, Iowa died Saturday, January 9, 2010, at Grundy Center Hospital, Long Term Care. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 14, 2010 at Colfax Presbyterian Church, Holland Iowa, with Pastors Larry Hoop and Larry Doughan officiating. Burial will follow at the Colfax Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. A memorial fund has been established.
Jake Edward Heeren was born December 27, 1924, in Albion Township, Butler County, Iowa, the son of Louie and Grace (Klaassen) Heeren. He attended rural school in Albion Township. Jake worked as a hired hand for area farmers until he was united in marriage to his wife Esther on February 18, 1948. Jake then went on to farm, first, just south of Stout and later in the Holland area and on the family farm north of Stout. Upon his retirement in 1991, Jake and Esther moved to Grundy Center, IA. He continued to help his son, James farm well into his 80’s. He was a member of the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church for more than 60 years. There Jake served as a trustee, deacon and for 18 years as an elder. On March 30, 1997 he was honored as an Elder Emeritus with the church. He enjoyed fishing, working on farms and spending quality time with his family.
Jake is survived by his wife Esther; children, Loren (Laura) Heeren of Cedar Falls, IA, James (Betty) Heeren of Grundy Center, IA and LaVonne (Scott) Edwards of New Hartford, IA; grandchildren, Brian Heeren, Amy (Mike) Roth, Jenny (Clint) Bagenstos, John (Carrie) Heeren, Todd Heeren, Joseph Edwards and Andrew Edwards and 6 great grandchildren; a brother Henry (Kathy) Heeren, of Parkersburg, IA and a sister Anna Mae Mehmen of Parkersburg, IA. Proceeded in death by his parents, his sister Ella Heeren, brother-in-law Don Mehmen and sister-in-law Margaret Heeren.
