Iona F. Claassen, 94, of Grundy Center, passed away on Thursday, June 07, 2012 at the Grundy Care Center while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 11th, 10:30 A.M. at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 10th from 5 to 7 P.M. at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Burial will follow funeral services at Rosehill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Iona was born on January 7, 1918 in Grundy Center, the daughter of Hugh & Hope Meyers. She grew up in Grundy Center, graduating from Grundy Center High School with the class of 1936. Iona then attended Pitze's Beauty School from August of 1938 to May of 1939. On April 4, 1945, Iona was united in marriage to LeRoy Claassen at the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center. The couple welcomed daughter Candi into their family. She worked as a beautician in Cedar Falls and owned The Elite Beauty Shop in Dike from 1942 until 1945. Iona also owned her home beauty shop at 306 6th Street in Grundy Center from January 1963 until retiring in March of 1993.

She was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church since 1945.

Iona is survived by her daughter Candi (Ron) Voss of Grundy Center; 2 grandchildren Todd (Julie) Voss and Tracey (Matt) Strong; 6 great-grandchildren; sister Bert Wilkins; sister-in-law Marlys Dieken; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband LeRoy Claassen.
