Homer D. Cannon of Reinbeck, Iowa, died Sunday, March 14, 2010, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, Iowa. Memorial service will be 10:30 A.M., Saturday, March 20, 2010, at Union Congregational United Church of Christ, 225 Broad Street, Reinbeck, Iowa 50669, with Pastor Joel Love officiating. Burial will be private. Memorial visitation will be Friday, March 19, 2010, from 4:00 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. with a Masonic Service at 6:30 P.M. conducted by Masonic Coin Lodge 394 of Reinbeck at French Hand Funeral Home, Reinbeck. Memorials may be made to the church or one’s charity of choice.
Homer was born on August 17, 1929 in Medford, Oregon, to his parents Charles "AC" and Lucy Cannon. He was raised in Iowa and graduated from Washington High School, in Washington Iowa. Homer was united in marriage to his wife Donna on November 17, 1948 in Kahoka, Missouri.Homer served his country in the United States Navy, serving on the USS Newport News.
Homer and Donna built their home in Reinbeck and welcomed their son Douglas James in 1968. Homer was a very active member in the Union Congregational United Church of Christ. He was a life long member of the American Legion, a member or Eastern Star and the Masons for over 50 years. Homer was a proud member of the NRA, and was active in the Boy Scouts Council.
Homer was an avid gardener, known for his tomatoes. He loved trap shooting, fishing, hunting and travel. He was fond of traveling to Orlando, Florida and he enjoyed seeing Shoji Tubchi and Andy Williams when visiting Branson, Missouri.
Homer is survived by his wife Donna of Reinbeck, Iowa; his son Douglas (Kim) of Iowa City, Iowa; his grandson James; his sister Viola (John) Ball of Kerrville, Texas; and many nieces and nephews and Grand Nieces and Nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Richard, and Charles (Clara); sisters Mary (Kenneth) Kuhn and May (Tony) Canastro.
