Herman J. Lupkes, 91, of Grundy Center, died from natural causes on Thursday, April 12, 2007 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Grundy Center while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. Funeral services are at 1:30 pm on Monday, April 16, 2007 at Bethany Presbyterian church in Grundy Center with Pastor Tom Bower officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Visitation is from 4 pm to 6 pm on Sunday at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Bethany Presbyterian Church.
Herman was born November 15, 1915 near Dike, Iowa, son of Uke and Frauke (Schiller) Lupkes. He attended country school thru the 8th grade and graduated from Dike High School in 1933. He worked as a hired hand on several farms. Herman married Vera Raske in 1942 and they farmed near Holland until 1952. They then moved to Grundy Center where he worked in the creamery and Dairy Herd Improvement for nine years. In 1961 he became custodian for the Grundy County Courthouse where he worked for 20 years. He then helped his wife as custodians for Bethany Presbyterian Church.
He was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church serving as treasurer for 34 years, and also as trustee, elder and deacon. Herman and Vera enjoyed going on bus tours and especially enjoyed their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Left to mourn his loss is his wife, Vera of Grundy Center; daughter, Lorraine Tonn and her husband Larry of Cedar Falls; son Gordon Lupkes and his wife Kathy of Albion; sister-in-law, Alice Lupkes of Parkersburg; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Uke; and sisters, Rickstena, Fannie, and Gertie.
