Henrietta Grace Byl, 89, of Grundy Center, Iowa, formerly of Parkersburg, Iowa, died on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Grundy Center. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg, Iowa with Pastor Keith Sievers officiating. Burial will follow at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg. Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 3, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Henrietta was born on June 14, 1921 in rural Grundy County, Iowa near Fern, daughter of Henry L. and Hannah (Schiller) Aswegan. She was raised in Fern and on February 6, 1946 was united in marriage with Teunis C. Byl. They made their home near Fern where they farmed and raised their son Calvin and daughter Shirley. Henrietta enjoyed the activities of farm life, playing organ and piano at the Salem Lutheran Church near Fern, making quilts and crafts, and playing cards with relatives and many friends.
After her husband died in 1983, she moved to Parkersburg. Henrietta joined the Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg after the Salem Church closed.
She is survived by her son, Calvin Byl and his wife, Aloha of Carmel, Indiana and her daughter Shirley Pennington, and her husband Mike of Laurens, South Carolina; and grandchildren Evan, Austin, and Emily Byl, and Jon and Shawn Pennington. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Teunis; infant son Dennis Paul; brother Harold Aswegan; sister Alma Jean Bergmann, an infant sister and infant twin brothers.
