Helen Simmons

April 25, 1911 — January 6, 2010

Helen Lucille Simmons, 98, of Hubbard, formerly of Eldora, passed away on Wednesday, January 06, 2010 at the Hubbard Care Center in Hubbard, IA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 9 th 10:30 A.M. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Eldora with burial to follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery . Visitation will be one hour prior at the church.






Helen Lucille Simmons was born April 25 th , 1911 on a farm near Central City, Iowa, the daughter of George and Emma (Weimer) Pfeil. In March of 1918, her family moved back to the family farm near Radcliffe , Iowa . On May 18 th of that same year, a tornado completely leveled the farm on which they were living.














In 1934 Helen was united in marriage to Valerian Henchal and they resided on a farm north of Radcliffe.



After Val passed away in 1970, Helen remained on the farm and later married Harlan Simmons in 1972. They later moved to their home on 14 th Street in Eldora.



Harlan passed away in 1995 and Helen remained in her house until she was afflicted with a stroke on Memorial Day morning in 2000. Shortly thereafter, Helen moved to the Hubbard Care Center where she remained until her death January 6, 2010.



Helen was preceded in death by her parents George and Emma, a brother Lester and sister Margarette.



Helen loved the land and led a life that was always tied to the changing seasons and duties of agriculture.



At the time of her passing, she was a faithful member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Eldora being at that time the oldest member of the parish.



Helen leaves behind many relatives and friends to cherish her memory among us.
