Helen was born on June 4, 1912 in Eldora, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Alice (De Groff) Speers. She graduated from Eldora High School in the Class of 1930. Helen then attended the Des Moines University of Business in Des Moines, Iowa. She was employed in the business office of the Hotel Fort Des Moines. Helen was united in marriage to Murl C. Schumacher on December 1, 1935 at her father's home in Eldora, Iowa. Helen was employed as the Deputy County Treasurer in Eldora until her election as County Treasurer in 1955, a position she held until her retirement in 1976.
Helen was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, in Eldora and served the church on many committees. She enjoyed golfing, walking and playing Bridge.
Helen is survived by her daughter Jane Ann Bachman of Altoona, IA; a granddaughter Lisa Mari (Jeff) Heffelfinger; one great grandson Jeremy and great granddaughter Hollie. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Murl; great granddaughter Lindsay Heffelfinger; brothers Howard, Ralph and Raymond Speers and sister Ruth Jenness.
