Helen Riekena, 91, of Wellsburg, passed away on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at the Ackley Presbyterian Village. Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 15, 2010 at the First Christian Reformed Church in Wellsburg with Pastor Bruce Baillie officiating. Burial will be held immediately following the funeral service at the the First Christian Reformed Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 14, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Doyen-Abels Funeral Home, Wellsburg.
Helen was born in rural Steamboat Rock on June 11, 1918 to her parents Henry and Gertrude Primus. She was raised in rural Steamboat Rock and graduated from Steamboat Rock High School in 1935. She was united in marriage to Emery Riekena on December 10, 1937 at the parsonage of the First Christian Reformed Church in Wellsburg.
Helen and Emery lived and raised their family in rural Wellsburg. In 1958 they moved to Wellsburg. In October of 1963 Helen lost her husband Emery. However, Helen continued to live in Wellsburg for many years until she was admitted to Ackley Presbyterian Village.
She was a life long member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Wellsburg. In her free time, Helen enjoyed gardening and loved to travel. Helen also loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be missed and long remembered by her friends and family.
Helen is survived by her children, Edward (Gen) Riekena of Grand Rapids, MI, Harlyn (Karen) Riekena of Wellsburg, IA and Mari (Dan) Leiser of San Jose, CA; her sister, Bernice Mulder of Port Sanilac, MI; her brother, John H. (June) Primus of Grand Rapids, MI; her 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Emery; by two children in infancy; brother Claus Primus and her grandchildren Kelly and Kent Riekena.
