Hattie Behrends

Hattie Behrends, 85, of Wellsburg, passed away on Friday, April 6, 2018 at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City, following a brief illness. Visitation for Hattie will be held on Sunday, April 8th from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Doyen-Abels Funeral Chapel in Wellsburg. The funeral service will be held on Monday, April 9th at 10:00 AM at the Wellsburg Reformed Church with Pastor Nathan Huisman officiating. Burial will follow the funeral service at the church cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Hattie was born on June 28, 1932 in rural Butler County, Iowa, to her parents Andrew and Lena (Johnson) Schipper. She was raised on the family farm in rural Butler County and baptized at Bethel Reformed Church also in rural Butler County. Hattie was united in marriage to Edwin Behrends on February 24, 1956. Together they welcomed three children into their family. Hattie was a devoted wife and helper to her husband Edwin and a loving, caring mother to her children.

She was a long-time member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church where she served the church in a variety of capacities. Hattie loved to sew, garden, can, bake and make large family meals. She also enjoyed playing cards. Hattie cherished 30 years of family vacations at the lake but her true joy in life was her family & friends.

Hattie is survived by her two sons, Glenn (Jan) of Waverly, Galen (Wanda) of Cedar Falls; daughter Jean (Dewayne) Hixson of West Des Moines; grandchildren Zachary Behrends, Travis (Krista) Behrends, Brett (Kelly) Behrends; Tyler Behrends (Tara Bondy), Trisha (Josh) Robinson, and Kyle & Allison Hixson; great-grandchildren Annika, Zane, & Mya Behrends, Porter & Paxton Behrends, Hudson & Harper Behrends, Colton & Taylor Behrends and Nevaeh Robinson; brothers Paul (Irma) Schipper & Lee (Dorothy) Schipper; sister-in-law Esther Schipper; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Edwin and 5 brothers and 4 sisters.
