Harvey D. Hinshaw, 98, of Eldora, Iowa died from natural causes at the Hamilton County Public Hospital in Webster City on Monday, June 16, 2008. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Friday, June 20, 2008 at the Eldora United Methodist Church in Eldora with Pastor Richard Boatman officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memory Gardens in Eldora with military honors by Walter-Sayer Post 182 of the American Legion and Roll-Harless Post 3974 of the VFW. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the services until service time.
Harvey was born February 21, 1910 in Sundance, Wyoming, son of Claren J. and Olivia Blanche (DeWitt) Hinshaw. He moved with his family to the Eldora area when he was 10 and lived there for the majority of his life, spending the last year in senior independent living apartments in Stratford, Iowa.
On January 10, 1945 he was united in marriage to Jennie Ferne Arnold. They farmed east of Eldora where they raised their two daughters, Barbara and Patricia. Harvey was a WWII Veteran serving as an airplane mechanic in the Army Air Corp. He was a member of the Eldora United Methodist Church, Walter-Sayer Post 182 of the American Legion, a former member of Eldora Rotary and Kiwanis, and the Eldora Historical Society. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels and volunteered driving people to doctor appointments in Des Moines and Ames. He enjoyed flying and took flying lessons as a retiree but never became licensed, and also learned to play golf. Harvey had traveled to every state in the Union with the exceptions of New Jersey and Hawaii. He enjoyed reading and learned the computer at a late age being very apt at surfing the internet. Harvey was very proud of his family and grandchildren who all loved him dearly.
He is survived by his wife, Ferne; daughters, Barbara Ann and her husband Bart Kemery of St. Louis, Missouri, and Patricia and her husband Jim Wilhelm of Dayton, Iowa; grandchildren, Elizabeth Kemery Sipes, Jennifer Kemery Couch, Michael DeWitt Kemery, Matthew Maas, and Amanda Wallace; great grandchildren, Mackenzie Couch, Jayden Kemery, Madelyn Kemery, and Keelie Maas; and by his sister, Nell Langhurst of Iowa City. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Claren Jennings Hinshaw; sister, Elvira Conley Wehrman; and grand-daughter Rebecca Lynne Kemery.
