Harrison "Brud" Wolcott, 87, passed away on April 9, 2014. Harry was born on Dec. 4, 1926, to Leo F. Wolcott and Eugenia "Boomer" Harrison. He graduated from Eldora High School in 1944, and enlisted in the Navy immediately after. During World War II, he served from Dec. 13, 1944, to July 9, 1946, as a radar specialist on the U.S.S. Oglala in the Pacific.
When he returned from the Navy, Harry spent a year at Iowa State for general education, where he became an avid Cyclone fan. After spending a year in Ames, he returned to Eldora to work with his father at the New Grand Theater.
He married Becky Catlin on Aug. 19, 1969, and opened Wolcott's Family Shoes and Men's Clothing in Eldora in 1971. After selling the store in 1987, he went on to manage the Eldora American Legion until his retirement in 1991.
But retirement couldn't stop Harry, and he quickly began spending his free time working at Hy-Vee. He was also a 50-year member of the Eldora Rotary Club, and spent 28 years as secretary and treasurer for the club. He recently spent the last few years as the custodian at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, of which he was a lifelong member.
While Harry loved his Cyclones, he loved golfing even more, and spent most of his free time out on the course. He could also be seen rooting for the Chicago Cubs, taking his yearly fishing trip to Canada or watching, attending or listening to every Iowa State game.
Harry is preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law Allen Walker; son, Rod; granddaughter, Rylee; and brother-in-law Keith VanPatter.
He is survived by his wife, Becky; sister, Patty VanPatter, of Eldora; son, Rick (Kari) Wolcott, of Eldora; daughters Beth Walker, of Artesia, NM, and Claudia Heltne, of Aubrey, Texas; grandchildren Julie Ferrell, of Ames, Hannah and Zach Murphy, of Eldora, Christine Shaekie, of Arizona, David (Traci) Walker, of Center Point, Texas, Sean (Lindsay) Walker, of Wylie, Texas, Glenn and Travis Heltne, of Aubrey, Texas, and a number of nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at the First Congregational United Church of Christ on Wednesday, April 16, at 11 a.m. A visitation will be held at the Creps-Abels Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 15, from 5 to 7 p.m.
