Harriet Onnen

Harriet Ann Onnen, 83, of Gundy Center, Iowa, passed away peacefully on the morning of Thursday, January 13, 2022, at Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center, Iowa surrounded by her loving family.

Following Harriet’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and there will be a public memorial service held at 12:00 pm on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at the Engelkes Abels Funeral Home located at 509 4th Street, Grundy Center, IA 50638.  There will be a public visitation held one hour prior to the service.  Pastor Luther Thoresen will be officiating the service for Harriet.  Memorial contributions may be directed in Harriet’s name to her family which will be later designated elsewhere.  For further information or to leave an online condolence please visit: www.abelsfuneralhomes.com.  Engelkes Abels Funeral Home is caring for Harriet and her family.

Harriet Ann Vander Holt was born on April 6, 1938, in Buckgrove, Iowa the daughter of Harm and Fannie (Engelkes) Vander Holt.  She attended school up until the 8th grade before beginning her working life.  Harriet was a woman who had a heart of Gold and work ethic that shined just as bright.  She was a woman who absolutely loved serving others. Harriet worked many years as a waitress and was remembered for always serving her customers with a beautiful smile.  She also dedicated many years to babysitting and loved every minute spent with all those kids she watched.

Harriet had a passion for bowling, racing (multiple trophies for demos), attending Country concerts, watching, and attending sporting events, traveling (especially Las Vegas) and anything that had to do with spending time with her grandkids.  The main passion she held onto was her love for her family and the memories that she was blessed to be a part of.  She was a beautiful woman and will be deeply missed.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Nancy (Jeff), Todd (Janelle), Rod Onnen and Rob (Jill); grandchildren: Danielle, Melanie (Dylan), Jayme (Tyler), Nichole (Kory), Melody (Steve) Jocilyn and Brooke; great-grandchildren: Noah, Eli, Emersyn, Breleigh, Kashton, McKenna, Ryleigh, Kasen, Katch and Alice.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Harm and Fannie Vander Holt as well as her siblings: Willard, Agnes, Willie, and Johnny.
