Harmmean Smith

October 2, 1932 — April 26, 2011

Harmmean J. Smith, 78, of Grundy Center, formerly of Morrison, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at the Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center, IA. A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 29th at 10:30 am at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center with Pastor Matt Miller officiating. A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 28th from 5 to 8 pm at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Burial will follow funeral services at the Reinbeck Cemetery in Reinbeck.

Harmmean was born on October 2, 1932 in Clarksville, Iowa, the daughter of John & Hulda (Naumann) Adelmund. She attended school in Charles City until the 8th grade and she later received her GED from Hawkeye Tech at the age of 50. She met Harold W. Smith and the two were united in marriage on December 31, 1951 in Reinbeck. The couple welcomed 3 children to their family. Harmmean worked as a CNA, she helped her husband with field tiling for many years for area farmers, owned and operated with her husband Smith Tiling and stayed at home to take care of her children. Harmmean lived in Morrison from 1951 until June of 2010, when she moved into the Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center.

She loved to sing, yodel, write stories, make quilts for her family members, enjoyed playing cards and loved to travel. She always looked forward to visits with her family and friends. Harmmean had a great sense of humor and everyone that knew her called her grandma. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and was a wonderful nurturer. Her family was her world and she will be dearly loved and missed by all that knew her.

Harmmean is survived by her children Craig (Crystal) Smith of Cedar Falls, IA, Jinny Grimm of Grundy Center, Vicki Whiteside of Owatonna, MN and adopted son Hank (Linda) Dingel of Grundy Center; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; 2 step- grandchildren & 2 step-great-grandchildren; sisters Nancy (Marty) Vahlkamp of Quincy, IL, Ella Vandeventor of Charles City, IA, Lena (Gary) Nieman of Waterloo, IA and Frieda Dow of Palmyra, MO; step-sons Harold D., Roy G. & Melvin Smith; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold W. Smith; her parents; 3 brothers & 4 sisters; 1 great-grandson.
