Harlan Carl Nielsen, 92, of Dike, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, January 14, 2016 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital, Long Term Care. A funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 18, 2016 at Fredsville Lutheran Church in Rural Cedar Falls, Iowa. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Burial will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Dike. In lieu of flowers memorial may be directed to Hope Lodge, Rochester, MN, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or IPTV.
Harlan was born on October 29, 1923 in Cedar Falls, Iowa; the son of Carl F. and Anna (Hansen) Nielsen. He graduated from Dike Consolidated School in 1941. On November 3, 1942, Harlan was united in marriage at the Dike Methodist Church to Marlis Irene Toombs. Harlan and Marlis were blessed with four children. He farmed his entire life in the Dike area and served on the Dike Farmers Coop Board, Fredsville Lutheran Church Council, the Dike Community School Board and he was a member of the Dike Danish Brotherhood Lodge #144.
Harlan enjoyed feeding out cattle and attending cattle sales. In his later years, he enjoyed watching cattle auctions on RFD-TV. Marlis and Harlan enjoyed collecting antiques and attending antique auctions. Harlan had a very vivid memory and enjoyed reminiscing at the coffee shop with a good cup of coffee.
Harlan is survived by his children Catherine (Merlyn) Petersen of Dike, Claudia (Mike) Squires of Greene, Amy Jensen of Dike and Glen (Kay) Nielsen of Dike; sixteen grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Marvel Hansen and Beverly Nielsen.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marlis; parents Carl & Anna; his in-laws Marcus and Katie (Stubbe) Kole; brother Bill Nielsen; sisters Wilma and Helen in childhood and Joyce Goetzinger; brothers in-law Bud Goetzinger and George Hansen; sons in-law Kenneth Andersen and Lane Jensen.
