Grace was born October 21, 1910 near Grundy Center, daughter of Charles and Jurena (Bakker) Petersen. She graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1930 then attended Grundy College for a short time. She graduated from Evangelical Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Marshalltown, Iowa in 1933 and then worked there as a registered nurse. On June 21, 1934 Grace was united in marriage to Ray William Maddux in St. Joseph, Missouri. They farmed in Grundy County until retirement.
She was a 65 year member of the First Baptist Church in Grundy Center. She enjoyed being a farm wife and also loved gardening, reading (especially her Bible), playing the piano, and fishing. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren play, even though they rode the three-wheeler a little too fast to suit her.
She is survived by her sons, Dean (Joyce) Maddux of Grundy Center and Gale (Jean) Maddux of Waterloo; three grandchildren, David (Michele) Maddux of Grundy Center, Martin (Mindy) Maddux of Des Moines, and Andrew (Kristen) Maddux of Largo, Florida; two step-grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray on January 1, 1980; an infant sister; brother, Manna Petersen; and sister, Henrietta Niehaus.
