Grace Harrenstein, 90, of Grundy Center, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Thursday, June 20th at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center. A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 24th at 11:00 A.M. at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church in rural Holland with Pastor Eric Duble officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 23rd from 5:30 to 7:30 at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Burial will follow the funeral service at the church cemetery.
Grace was born on February 20, 1923 in Holland, Iowa, the daughter of Herman Sr. & Ubbina (Rosevink) Beenken. She attended country school in Holland with her six brothers and sisters and later attended 2 years at the Grundy Center High School. Grace worked on her father's farm with her family for many years. On February 20, 1945, she was united in marriage to Alvin G. Harrenstein in Wellsburg. The couple welcomed three children into their family. After Grace and Alvin were married, they moved to Muskogee, OK, where Alvin was stationed in the Army. They moved back to Grundy Center and lived on the family farm for 68 years.
She was a lifelong member of the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church and belonged to several of the church women's groups.
Grace enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking pies and visiting with family and friends but her true joy came from her family. She most enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her children Alvin "Dean" (Joyce) Harrenstein of Parkersburg, IA Larry (Julie) Harrenstein of Grundy Center, IA & Brenda Harrenstein (husband Jack Cherry) of Grundy Center, IA; grandchildren Kristi (Dwight) Eley of Zearing, IA, Barry (Amanda) Harrenstein of Hubbard, IA, Teresa (Brett) Kremenak of Grundy Center, IA, Adam (Kellie) Harrenstein of LaPorte City, IA, Gretchen (Tim) Madden of Wellsburg, IA & Elyse Cherry of Grundy Center, IA ; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister Johanna Garrett of Grundy Center and a brother Lutjen "Sonny" Beenken of Grundy Center. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Alvin G. in 1977; siblings Katharina Zech, Jennie Van Deest, Herman Beenken & Jake Beenken.
