Glen E. Callaway, 94, of Steamboat Rock, died at his home from natural causes on Saturday, September 15, 2007 while under the care of Iowa Hospice. Following private family graveside services at the Steamboat Rock Cemetery, a memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, September 18 at the First Baptist Church of Eldora. There will be no public visitation. Memorials may be directed to the Eldora First Baptist Church or Hospice.
Glen was born July 7, 1913, at his parent's home in Melrose Township, rural Grundy County, Iowa, son of John H. and Jessie M. (Musgrave) Callaway. He attended country school in Melrose Township and graduated from Eldora High School in 1932. On February 14, 1939 Glen was united in marriage to Lola M. Heltibridle at her parent's home in Grundy County. Glen had been employed as a mechanic and parts-man for the Grundy Center Ford Garage, International Harvester in Eldora, Rooks Implement in Eldora, and Hauser Implement in Whitten where he retired in 1975.
He was a former member of Alice Church of God of rural Conrad and presently a member of the First Baptist Church in Eldora. Glen loved model railroads and trains, and he created model steam engines with a metal lathe as well as other objects such as candle holders that could be made from metal. He also enjoyed his coffee time with friends at the School House CafAC. in Steamboat Rock.
Glen is survived by his wife, Lola; son, Robert and his wife Nancy of Eldora; Daughter-in-law, Judy Callaway of Clear Lake; grandchildren, Chris Callaway and his wife Alyssa of Clear Lake, Cathy Callaway of Des Moines, and Carey Callaway Miksch and her husband Dan of Kansas City; great-grandson Lewis Callaway of Clear Lake; brother, Dale Callaway and his wife Dorothy of Conrad; sisters-in-law Irene Naumann of Eldora and Maris Burns of Grundy Center; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his oldest son Eugene D. Callaway.
