Gertrude Waldo

Gertrude I. Waldo, 87, of Eldora, Iowa, died from natural causes on Sunday, July 16, 2006 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit. Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M., Friday, July 21, 2006, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora, Iowa, with Pastor Corey Larson officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memory Garden Cemetery in Eldora. Visitation will be Thursday, July 20, 2006, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora, where the family will be present to greet friends. A memorial fund has been established.

Gertrude was born July 2, 1919, at home on the farm in rural Grundy County, Iowa, the daughter of Melvin and Nina A. (Strawbridge) Lewis. She attended country school in rural Grundy County. On November 24, 1944, Gertrude was united in marriage to Leo "Ed" Waldo at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. After their marriage, they lived on a farm in rural Grundy County, farming for a number of years. The family then moved to Eldora. Gertrude began working at the Infant Seat Company as well as Berg's Newsstand. Gertrude then became employed at Dodger in Eldora, working there for many years. Gertrude's husband Ed died on September 10, 1978, and she continued to make Eldora her home. After she retired from Dodger in 1981, she began working at Dorothy's Senior Center, baking cakes, pies, and salads. She continued working until December 2005.

Gertrude was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora. She was also a member of the VFW in Marshalltown, and the Legion Auxiliary of Eldora and Steamboat Rock. Gertrude was a hard worker who always strived to do her best in whatever she did. She loved to dance and golf, and she was an excellent cook. Gertrude was also a member of the Red Hat Society of Eldora.

She is survived by her daughter Sharon Garr of Eldora, Iowa; her granddaughter Linda Garr of Ackley, Iowa; her grandson Scott Garr of Eldora, Iowa; one great-granddaughter Leslie Garr of Eldora, Iowa; two great-great-granddaughters Alyssa and Madison Stille of Eldora, Iowa; and one sister-in-law Doris Mehlig and her husband Virgil of Beatrice, Nebraska.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ed Waldo; her son-in-law Delmar Garr; and two brothers William ?Bud? Lewis, and Eldon E. Lewis.
