George Hermanus Viet was born on March 5, 1924 in rural Dike, IA, to his parents Geert "George" and Fannie (Berends) Viet. George attended the Beaver and Fairfield Township Country School, attending to the 8th grade. George was united in marriage to Mabel Frieling on March 7, 1945 at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church parsonage. George worked briefly for John Deere in 1946 while living in Dike, later moving to the farm stead west of Dike in 1947. George and Mabel welcomed their daughter Diane into the world on December 19, 1948. George and Mabel farmed for over 47 years before retiring in Grundy Center in 1993. George and Mabel raised crops as well as livestock.

George enjoyed woodworking; his favorite lumber of choice was Walnut. Some of the things he made included a china hutch, curio cabinet, many picture frames, and decorative shelving. He loved to spend time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren. George and Mabel traveled to all of the 50 states, including Mexico and Canada. Together George and Mabel enjoyed attending garage sales and flea markets where they added to Mabel’s collection of colorful dishes. Many days were spent playing card games or putting together puzzles. George loved ice cream and made it from scratch on holidays and special occasions, passing down this tradition to his daughter and grandchildren.

George is survived by his loving daughter Diane (David) Kremer of Wellsburg; grandchildren Craig Wildeboer of Grundy Center, Chad (Kathleen) Wildeboer of North Port, FL and Amy (Travis) Knudsvig of Waterloo; step-grandchildren Bridget (Jeff) Hess of Solon and Kevin (Kelsey) Kremer of Dunkerton; great-grandchildren Dalton Lee Wildeboer, Austin & Cole Wildeboer and Emersyn and Asher Knudsvig; step-great-grandchildren Keegan, Madysen, and Paige Hess, Riley and Ty Kremer; sister Elisabeth Clapp of Marion.  George was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mabel, infant son, brothers Ben, Herman (Mary) Viet, sisters Martha (Herman) VanHauen, Jenny (Louis) Bakker.
