Gerald Strickler

December 26, 1924 — October 3, 2014

Gerald Glenn Strickler, 89, of Grundy Center, Iowa, passed away Friday, October 3, 2014, at the Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center while under the care of Care Initiative Hospice. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center, with Pastor Nathan Barkley officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 from 6 pm until 8 pm. at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. A memorial fund has been established.

Gerald was born December 26, 1924, in Grundy County, Iowa, the son of Glenn Harold and Margaret (Wright) Strickler. Gerald grew up in the Grundy Center area attending school there and graduating with class of 1942. Gerald served his country in U.S. Army from July 23, 1943 to November 27, 1945. After his discharge Gerald started farming a passion he loved. On August 7, 1954 he was united in marriage to Mary Lou Hughes in Biggsville, Illinois. The couple lived south of Grundy Center for 10 years. They then moved to the farm. Gerald moved to Arlington Place in April 2009. He then moved to Grundy Care Center in August of 2014. Gerald was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Grundy Center, were he served as deacon and a trustee. Gerald liked puzzles and reading especially about the different Wars history. He enjoyed spending time with family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his; son: David and his wife Janie Strickler of Grundy Center, Iowa; 4 grandchildren: Justin (Ashlea), Chase, Alexa, and Logan all of Grundy Center; great-grandchildren, Hayden and Jaxton; and a sisters-in-law: Irene Strickler of Grundy Center and Barbara Maxwell, of Naperville, Illinois.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife Mary Lou in 2009; brother, Donald; brother-in-law Henry Maxwell.
