George William Schmidt, 93, of Holland, passed away at his home on Monday, March 26, 2018. A visitation will be held Thursday, March 29, 2018, at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center, from 5-7PM. A funeral service will be held the following day, Friday, March 30, 2018 at the Colfax Presbyterian Church in Holland, IA, at 10:30 AM, with Pastor Robbie Grames officiating. Visitation will resume from the evening prior at 9:30 AM. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, memorials be directed to the church. George William Schmidt was born to his parents George and Wilhelmina (Meyniu) Schmidt on January 8, 1925, in the house in Holland, IA. George shared his life with his only brother Rudolph Schmidt. George graduated from the Grundy Center High School in 1943, went to work at the Holland Elevator, then to Clay’s in W’loo, then to Rath Packing Company, where he would meet his future wife, Minnie Siebenga. George and Minnie were married in Parkesburg, IA, on June 17, 1947, at the Christian Reformed Church. George and Minnie moved to the family farm near Holland, IA, on January 1, 1950, with their two children and went on to have 3 more.
George was a loving, caring, hard working spouse & father to his family. He took pride in taking the family to serve the Lord, at the Colfax Presbyterian Church near Holland. George was proud to become a Deacon, Trustee, & Elder, along with chaperoning youth groups on work retreats, through the years. George made sure his children were raised in a Christian Home. George enjoyed gardening, taking pride in raising his potatoes, bowling, pitching on the fast pitch team for Holland, playing board games, cards, jigsaw puzzles, along with his daily crossword puzzles done in ink.
George is survived by his 3 sons, Steven (Marilynn “Tiny” Moehrl) Schmidt of Marshalltown, Timothy (Pam Hulne) Schmidt of Grundy Center, William (Elizabeth Drew) Schmidt of Marshalltown; daughter Marge (Dave) Diamond of Conrad. 13 grandchildren and spouses; 23 great grandchildren; and 1 great, great grandchild.
George was preceded in death by his parents, wife Minnie, son Charles, brother Rudolph Schmidt, and sister-in-law Collyn (Franzenburg) Schmidt.
