George Hansen

George D. Hansen, 79, of rural Hudson, Iowa, died Sunday, May 15, 2011, at his home in rural Hudson, Iowa, while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M., Thursday, May 19, 2011, at Union Congregational United Church of Christ Church in Reinbeck, Iowa, with Pastor Joel Love officiating. Burial will follow at the Reinbeck Cemetery in Reinbeck. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 18, 2011, from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at French Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck, where there will also be a Masonic Service at 6:30 PM performed by the Coin Lodge #394.Memorials may be made to The El Kahir Shriner's Transportation Fund or Raise the Roof Fund for United Church of Christ in Reinbeck in George's name.
George David Hansen was born on March 15, 1932 in New Hampton, Iowa son of Arthur and Ferne (Phillips) Hansen. George grew up in the Ionia, New Hampton and Cedar Falls areas. He attended Ionia grade school then Cedar Falls High School and then graduated from New Hampton High School in 1950. After graduating he attended Wartburg College. He enlisted in the United States Navy serving his country for 16 month of active duty then joined the Navy Reserve.
On May 10, 1953, he married Shirley Marilyn Jensen at St. John's Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. After their marriage they lived in Waverly where Allen was born, Hampton where Garry was born, and Cedar Falls where Sharilyn was born. They lived in Riceville, Mason City and Cedar Falls before settling down in Voorhies area where he farmed and was a Pioneer seed corn dealer for 30 years. George was an excellent craftsman and repairman and loved the challenge of fixing and building.
He loved to read, play cards, fish, and attend his grandchildren's sporting events and school activities. After retiring he enjoyed 13 years wintering in Pharr, Texas and watching America Funniest Videos. George was a member of the Shriner's Hospital Dad's and enjoyed driving children to the Shriners hospitals in Minneapolis, Chicago and Houston areas.
George was a Mason and past Worshipful Master of Coin Lodge #394 in Reinbeck for 50 years, El Kahir Shriner where he helped start the Motor Express, member of the Mobile Nobles and American Legion Post #242 of Reinbeck and Reinbeck Jaycees. He was very active at the United Church of Christ where he helped with Bazaar's and Habitat for Humanity. George was a volunteer Rainbow Dad for the International Order of Rainbow for Girls.
George's most important role was that of husband to Shirley and father to his three children, Allen (Connie) Hansen of Reinbeck, Garry (Colleen) Hansen of rural Hudson, and Sharilyn ( Ken) Darst of Cedar Falls; 10 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and a sister Goldie Stottrup of Crescent City, California. He was preceded in death by his parents, Art and Ferne Hansen
