Frederick Vanderwerf

Frederick A. Vanderwerf, 88, of Wellsburg, passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Grundy Center while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 5th at 10:30 A.M. at St. Peter's Country Church, 13607 D. Ave., Wellsburg, IA. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 4th from 5 to 8 P.M. at the Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg. Burial will follow the funeral service at the church cemetery.

Frederick was born on September 29, 1925 in Grundy County, Iowa and was the son of Anna Vanderwerf & step-son of Walbert Hinders. He attended country school in Grundy County, where he completed the 12th grade. Frederick worked as a farmer and farmed in Grundy County for most of his life. On September 25, 1947, he was united in marriage to Marlys Annette Riebkes at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Wellsburg. The couple welcomed 4 children into their family.

He was a member of St. Peter's Country Church, where he served on the church board, was in choir, was a part of the Men's Brotherhood and had also served as a youth group sponsor. Frederick enjoyed golf and fishing and spending time with his family, especially with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were the light of this life.

Frederick is survived by his daughters Pauline (Rick) Vogel of Wellsburg, Sandy (Karl) Harken of Aplington & Deb (Kendall) Ringena of Wellsburg; grandchildren Derek (Jessie) Harken, Nathan (Lindsay) Vogel, Travis (Sarah) Ringena & Allison (Todd) Schoolman; great-grandchildren Colton & Caylee Harken, Aniya & Maddox Vogel and Dawson Schoolman; brothers Glenn (Elinor) Hinders of Eldora & Russell (Bev) Hinders of Ackley and sister Shirlene Mulder of Parkersburg. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Marlys; infant son Ivan Dale; brother-in-law Herman Mulder.
