Floyd Wayne Wallace, age 93, of Eldora, Iowa passed away on Monday, March 3, 2014 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center, Iowa, of natural causes. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Eldora. Burial will follow at the Eldora City Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Eldora American Legion-Walter Sayer Post #182 V.F.W.-Roll-Harless #3974. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 7, 2014 at the Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. Memorials may be directed to the First Baptist Church of Eldora.
Floyd was born on August 2, 1920 in Quitman, AR, the first of five children of Floyd and Ollie (Hall) Wallace. He was raised in Quitman and graduated from Quitman High School in the Class of 1938, the last class to have graduated in the old brick school house. He completed his undergraduate work at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and went on to earn his Master's Degree from the University of Arkansas in Agricultural Education. However, his education was interrupted in 1942 when Floyd joined the United States Navy. He served his country during World War II and was honorably discharged on October 19, 1945.
Floyd was united in marriage to Juanita Canady on April 12, 1941 in Damascus, Arkansas. They welcomed three children into their family and enjoyed many happy years together until Juanita's passing in 2005.
Floyd taught Vocational Agriculture. He began his teaching career in Greenbrier, Arkansas working for two years at the Greenbrier High School. Floyd went on to teach at several high schools in Arkansas until he and his family moved to Iowa. In August of 1955 he began teaching in New Providence, Iowa. He taught there for 6 years until other career opportunities took him away from teaching. Later, he returned to teaching and taught at NESCO and the Eldora New Providence Consolidated School District, retiring in 1985.
Floyd was a member of the First Baptist Church in Eldora. He served the church as an usher, greeter and taught Sunday school. Floyd worked with the Meals on Wheels Program. He was also a member of the Eldora American Legion. Floyd was the manager of the senior housing in Eldora for 9 years and a board member of the Dorothy's Senior Center. He loved horses and children. His true joy in life came from spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Floyd is survived by his children, Wanda Wubben of Johnston, IA, Glynda Wooten of Marion, IA and David (Shellie) Wallace of Gainesville, TX; his grandchildren Brian (Cindy) Wubben, Scott Wubben, Byron Wooten and Air Force Captain Amanda (Eric) Smith, who will not be able to attend due to being deployed overseas; 7 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Juanita; 1 brother; 3 sisters and 2 sons-in-law.
