Ferne Marion Wiarda, 89, of Grundy Center, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Grundy Center while under the care of Unity Point Hospice. A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 28th at 11:00 AM at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center with Pastor Phil Dicks officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 27th from 4 to 7 PM at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Burial will follow the funeral service at the Rosehill Cemetery in Grundy Center.
Ferne was born on October 10, 1925 on a farm in Black Hawk Township, Iowa, the daughter of William & Alvena (Johns) Klink. She grew up near Reinbeck where she attended school, graduating from Reinbeck High School with the class of 1943. After high school, Ferne went to work for John Deere in Waterloo as an office worker. On September 4, 1945, Ferne was united in marriage to Dean Wiarda at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa. Together they welcomed three children into their family. Ferne & Dean farmed together in Dike, Dows and Stout. Their family settled to Grundy Center in 1958.
After moving to Grundy Center, Ferne's husband Dean sold life and health insurance and Ferne worked at Coast to Coast for many years and later become the manager at As You Like It in Grundy Center, where she later retired from. Ferne also spent many years at home taking care of her family.
Ferne was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center where she was very active, she was a former member of the Daughters of the Nile, was a member of the local Eastern Star chapter and was a past Girl and Boy Scout Leader. She enjoyed baking and was famous for her brownies and Blarney Stone cakes. She also enjoyed camping and would winter in Rock Port, Texas, where she and her husband were members of many different camping groups. Ferne and Dean enjoyed traveling together on many different trips including ones he earned through his years as an insurance agent.
What Ferne most enjoyed in life was spending time with her husband and her family and especially her two grandchildren Shannon and Morgan.
Ferne is survived by her husband Dean of Grundy Center; children Judy (Larry) Buchan and their son Shannon Buchan, all of Waterloo, Sandi Hill and her daughter Morgan Hill, both of Cary, Illinois and Dennis (Deanna) Wiarda of Loveland, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Arlene Mohr; son-in-law Tracy Hill.
