Eugene Buthman

Eugene Robert "Gene" Buthman, 73, of Steamboat Rock, IA, passed away at his home on January 3rd 2017. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 7th at 1:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church of Steamboat Rock with Mike Brost officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date. The family will continue to celebrate Gene's life at the Steamboat Rock Boat Club following the memorial service where a light lunch will be served. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Gene was born January 12th 1943 in Eldora, Iowa, the son of Ernest & Clara (Elzig) Buthman. He spent a majority of his life in Steamboat Rock, where he attended school, graduating with the class of 1961. After high school, Gene learned the trade of being a meat cutter. In later years, he worked various jobs in the area, working for the City Park District, the City of Eldora doing maintenance work and briefly at the Iowa Falls Police Department.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Steamboat Rock. Gene was a people person and he enjoyed visiting with his friends and family. His passion in life was a love for trains, whether it was attending train shows around the country, collecting trains and memorabilia and sharing those stories with others. Gene will be missed by his family and his community in which he loved so much.

Gene is survived by his mother Clara Ward of Clarissa, MN; sister Cheryl (David) Anderson of Dayton, MN and brother Paul Buthman of Bisbee, Arizona; nieces and nephews Mike (Shannon) Anderson of Rogers, MN and Sara (Jon) McElwain of Champlin, MN; great nephews Brayden and Brody Anderson and Cooper and Luke McElwain. He was preceded in death by his father; step-father Chalmer Ward.
