Ethel M. Newby, 90, of Eldora, died on Saturday, August 25, 2012 at Valley View Nursing and Rehab Center in Eldora. Funeral services will be at 1:30 pm on Monday, August 27, 2012 at the Eldora United Methodist Church in Eldora with Pastor Vicki Reece officiating. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Memory Gardens in Eldora. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Eldora United Methodist Church, Care Initiatives Hospice, or the Eldora Public Library. Ethel was born May 7, 1922, in Ackley, Iowa, daughter of Roy and Rose (Mennenga) Smith. She was raised in Ackley, Iowa and Fithian, Illinois and on September 6, 1939 was united in marriage to Wendell P. Newby in Danville, Indiana. Ethel and Wendell farmed in the Union, Iowa area until 1955 then spent 4 years in Whitten before moving to Eldora in 1959, where Ethel was employed as a cook for the Iowa State Training School for Boys before retiring in 1984.
She was a member of the Eldora United Methodist Church and was a "Red Hat Lady" for many years. Ethel and Wendell enjoyed spending their winters in San Benito, Texas for many years and Ethel maintained their Texas home after Wendell's death until selling it in 2004.
Surviving are Ethel's children, Roy (Sharon) Newby of Plainfield, Indiana, Sharon Kay Newby of Louisville, Kentucky, Larry (Mary) Newby of Louisville and Richard (Vickie) Newby of Bradenton, Florida; grandchildren, Christa (Chuck) Rogalla of Bradenton, Florida and Tyler (Laurel) Newby of San Francisco, California; great-grandchildren Adelin and Griffin Newby; sisters, Gertrude "Toots" (Curt) Severson of Nevada, Iowa and Doris (Cecil) Windecker of Hubbard, Iowa; and by many nieces and nephews. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Wendell on July 1, 1991; sisters, Mary Parish, Dorothy Dohlman and Grace Fichtel; and by brothers, Henry, Harold and Raymond Smith.
