Esther B. Mamminga, 92, of Grundy Center, passed away on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Grundy Center. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 20
th
at 10:30 am at the First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center with Pastor John M. Butler officiating. Burial will follow funeral services at Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, March 19
th
from 4 to 6 pm at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center.
Esther was born on August 26, 1917 in Toledo, Iowa the daughter of Peter & Alma (Stransky) Rayman. She grew up in Tama County attending school in Toledo, graduating from Toledo High School. She met Frank Mamminga and the two were united in marriage on June 14, 1936 at Esther’s parents’ home. The couple moved to Grundy Center, where they welcomed two children. Esther received her teaching certificate and taught school for one year in Lincoln, Iowa. She stayed home to take care of her children and when her children were grown, she and her husband Frank ran the Grundy Food Mart on G Ave. in town for 42 years.
Esther enjoyed scrapbooking, writing letters to friends and family and was known for being a wonderful cook. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center.
Esther is survived by her children Mary (John) Miller of Cedar Falls, IA and Marvin (Carmen) Mamminga of Hutchison, KS; grandchildren Julie (Jay) Hinrichs of Greeley, CO, Brad (Paula) Miller of Ormond Beach, FL, Brian (Jill) Miller of West Dundee, IL, Sigrid (Mike) Moylan of Omaha, NE & Ian (Whitney) Mamminga of Overland Park, KS; 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank; brother Lester Rayman.
