Ervin Readout

Ervin W. Readout, 77, of Steamboat Rock, Iowa, died from natural causes on Wednesday, September 22, 2004, while visiting family in Elkhart, Indiana. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, September 28 at the First Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock with Pastor Bruce Baillie officiating. Burial will follow at 1:30 PM on Tuesday at Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown. Visitation is from 6:00-8:00 PM on Monday at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora.



Ervin was born February 5, 1927, in Buchanan County, Iowa, son of Benjamin and Trena (Koch) Readout. He was raised in Steamboat Rock where he graduated from high school in 1945. He was a veteran of WWII serving as a clerk and medic in the U.S. Army from 1946-1947. On September 14, 1952 he was united in marriage to Mathilda Jane Tresemer "Topsy" in Eldora. Ervin farmed near Steamboat Rock until 1965 then went to work for Mid-Equipment in Grundy Center where he worked for 20 years. He was then self employed as a roofer while working for Monfort in Marshalltown, and various other jobs. He retired from Monfort in 1988.



He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock and the Marshalltown Senior Citizen?s Center. He enjoyed all kinds of outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, target shooting, and horses. He especially loved to camp and travel.



Surviving Ervin is his best friend and companion, Betty "B.J." Himes of Marshalltown; daughters, Becky (Chris) Cheyne of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Sally (Francis) Hastert of Darlington, Wisconsin, and Vettre (Shane) Wood of Eldora; son, William Readout of Steamboat Rock; sister, Bessie Clay of Elkhart, Indiana; and by 15 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife "Topsy" on May 9, 1985; his parents; sister, Ellen Readout; brothers, Arthur, Harold and Clifford; and by a great grandchild, Dorian Elliott.
