Ernest Barz

March 23, 1923 — August 14, 2014

Ernest "Ernie" A. Barz, age 91, of Eldora passed away on Thursday, August 14, 2014 at the Eldora Nursing & Rehab Center, while under Care Initiatives Hospice. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, August 18, 2014 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memory Gardens in Eldora. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Sunday, August 17, 2014 at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora.

Ernie was born on a farm west of Eldora on March 23, 1923, the son of Otto and Martha( Daleske) Barz. He graduated from Eldora High School in 1941. He farmed east of town with his father before enlisting in the Army and serving in Germany during WWII from 1944 - 1946, running a tailor shop in Nuremberg, Germany. After returning from the war, Ernie married Minnie Marie Doss on December 1, 1946 at St. Paul Lutheran Church. They farmed three miles east of Eldora for 40 years before moving into town.

Ernie spent his life with faith, family, and farming. He and Minnie were blessed with two boys and two girls. He served in several church offices, and extension council, as a township trustee, and on the ASCS committee. He could fix farm machinery with inventions made from recycled parts. He spent some time doing custom chopping for area farmers and driving school bus for 10 years. After moving into Eldora, his hobbies included fishing, making clocks from planter discs, cutting up and recycling scrap metal, and working seasonally for Farm Bureau Service delivering fertilizer and chemicals.

Left to cherish Ernest's memory are his wife of 67 years, Minnie, four children: Melvin (Susie) Barz of Georgetown, TX, Lois (Dennis) Eige of Marshalltown, IA, Diane (Bruce) Clark of Waterloo, IA, and Bruce (Mary) Barz of Boise, ID, 11 grandchildren: Shane Barz, Elsie Barz, Darrin (Heather) Eige, Andrew Eige, Christine Eige, Brett (Bobbie) Clark, Kate (Jesse) Henderson, Rachel Clark, Amy Compton, Shannon (John) Sanden, Megan Barz; 13 great grandchildren: Jenna and Paris Eberhardt, Riley, Ethan, and Eli Eige, Carter, Colton, and Rowen Clark, Torrie Clark-Meeks and Truman Meeks, Marie Henderson, Parker and Emmett Eige, two sisters: Ruby (Jim) Parris of Atkins, Ruth Balvanz of Wellsburg, one brother Marvin (Marilyn) Barz of Cheney, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
